In the Netherlands, much importance is attached to the workers’ right to strike. Dutch employers must tolerate strikes, including the negative consequences this may have for them, as long as the “rules of play” are met. To ensure that employees are not deterred from the use of this right, the Dutch Central Board of Appeal ruled that a strike should not affect the height of the unemployment benefit. This means that the daily wage of an employee, on the basis of which the unemployment benefit is calculated, should not be negatively affected by a strike anymore.
